Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a growing concern among teenage girls and women of reproductive age, affecting various aspects of life, from menstruation to childbearing. It is characterized by the formation of cysts in the ovaries and affects an estimated 8 to 13 percent of women of reproductive age, according to the World Health Organization.

While lifestyle modifications, exercise, stress reduction, and weight management can help manage PCOS, some experts suggest that Ayurveda may offer potential benefits for the condition.

Ayurveda, explains Anjinai Agarwal, Ayurvedic expert and director of Royal Bee Natural Products, takes a holistic approach to addressing the underlying hormonal imbalances associated with PCOS, with a particular focus on balancing the body’s doshas, including vata, pitta, and kapha. .

Dr Priya Chauhan, Ayurveda expert from Ayurveda Company, agrees by emphasizing that Ayurveda not only treats physical symptoms but also addresses emotional and lifestyle factors. This comprehensive approach aims to address the root causes of PCOS and promote long-term well-being.

Unlike conventional treatments that often rely on hormonal medications, Ayurveda, according to Dr. Chauhan, avoids such medications, reducing the risk of common side effects of hormonal therapy such as weight gain and mood swings. Instead, it uses herbal remedies to correct hormonal imbalances, providing a more natural and sustainable solution.

Dr Astha Lalwani from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at TMU Hospital Moradabad suggests that adopting an Ayurvedic diet along with yoga practices, weight reduction, and healthy eating habits – such as incorporating whole grains, fruits and vegetables and avoiding saturated fats, refined sugars and excess salt can reduce Insulin resistance and reduced androgen levels are associated with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Key Ayurvedic principles for managing PCOS:
Ayurveda includes several basic principles for managing PCOS. One crucial aspect is enhancing digestive function. According to Dr. Chauhan, Ayurveda focuses on improving the digestive fire (deepana) and the process of digestion (pachana karma). This not only helps in better absorption of nutrients but also contributes to hormonal balance by ensuring that the body gets essential nutrients.

Another crucial principle is Sroto Avarodha treatment, which involves removing blockages in the body’s channels. To achieve this, Ayurveda uses panchakarma treatments such as virichana, a substance used for purification. By removing these obstacles, Ayurveda facilitates effective regulation of hormones.

Ayurveda also includes Rasayana medicines, which consist of rejuvenating herbs and formulas that play a vital role in promoting overall health and vitality in individuals with PCOS. These medications support the body in recovery and maintain its balance.

Recognizing the importance of addressing specific dosha imbalances (e.g., vata, pitta, kapha) that may contribute to PCOS, Ayurveda customizes treatments to individual dosha profiles, ensuring a personalized and effective approach. Lifestyle modifications, known as Nidan Parivarjan, are an integral part of Ayurvedic PCOS management, including avoiding causative factors such as junk food, oily meals, excessive sleep and a sedentary lifestyle.
