Short on reconstruction funds, Afghan contractors are buying property in Dubai

Afghan contractors generating billions of US dollars in funds for the reconstruction of Afghanistan have been revealed to be buying luxury properties in Dubai.

Billions of dollars in reconstruction funds were stolen or misused during two decades of Western intervention in the war-torn country, US government auditors say.

According to the report, the former Speaker of the Afghan Parliament Rehman Rahmani and his son Ajmal bought a property worth about 1.5 million dollars in Dubai.

Apart from this, the documents of the land registry in Germany show that 6 companies owned by Ajmal Rahmani have properties worth 197 million euros.

An Afghan contractor named Rashid Popal also has property in Dubai. Another former contractor, Saeed Ismail Amiri, owns a villa in The Meadows, which today is worth about $1.6 million.

Today Stephen Orenstein, one of the principals of the Supreme Group Company, owns a bungalow in the Emirates Hills community The property was last sold in 2022 for $16.8 million.
