In June 2023, 3 Indian nationals have been arrested and charged with the murder of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nagar on Canadian soil.

According to the British Broadcasting Corporation, 45-year-old Hardeep Singh Nagar was shot dead in June last year in a suburb of Vancouver, the city with the largest Sikh population.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused the Indian government of involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh, after which the diplomatic tension between the two countries increased, while India strongly denied this claim.

Announcing the arrests on Friday (May 3), Canadian Police Superintendent Mandeep Moker said three suspects had been arrested, including 22-year-old Kiran Brar, 22-year-old Kamalpreet Singh and 28-year-old Kiranpreet Singh.

He said the three Canadians live in the city of Edmonton, Alberta, where they were arrested. The case against them includes several counts of murder.

The police further said that investigation is going on from various angles including the connection of the accused with India.

Assistant Commissioner David Tebol said that separate investigations are continuing in this case, these investigations are not only related to those arrested today but also related to other aspects and persons.

He said investigators were cooperating with counterparts in India, but that cooperation had been difficult and challenging over the years. Police said there could be more involved in the murder and more arrests could be made.
