A Reddit user recently shared an unsettling experience she had at her younger sister’s wedding. According to her, all the guests who were considered plus-size were grouped together at a reception table labeled “Weight Watchers.” This decision was not made as part of a theme or joke; it was just presented as is.
The user, known as Basic-Donut2903, was involved in planning the event and was shocked to discover upon her arrival that she, along with every other plus-size guest, was assigned to this specific table. She recounted, “I go to find my table…and I swear to god, the little name card says ‘Weight Watchers.’ I look around and it hits me that everyone at the table is plus-size. Every single one of us.”
She expressed her humiliation about the situation. When she confronted her sister—the bride—about it, her concerns were dismissed with laughter. The bride responded, “Don’t be so sensitive, I just thought it’d be more comfortable if people were with others like them. It’s a body positive thing.”
However, the arrangement didn’t feel “body positive” at all to those seated at the table. “How is segregating all the bigger people at one table body positive?” she questioned. It seemed more like an attempt to “Hide the fat guests in the corner so they don’t ruin the aesthetic,” she added.
Feeling deeply hurt, she decided to leave the event early, taking her gift with her. “My feelings are legit so hurt right now,” she shared online. “Am I overreacting?? Or was that straight-up rude and humiliating?”
Bride Grouped Plus-Size Guests at “Weight Watchers” Table, Claiming It Was Body Positive
Online commenters supported her feelings, affirming that she was right to feel insulted. One commenter noted, “That was incredibly rude and childish of her, and you have every reason to be upset.” Another added, “You (and everyone else at that table!) deserve much better.”
The incident has struck a chord not only because of its personal nature but also because it raises larger questions about the current state of the body positivity movement. Originally intended to foster inclusivity, the movement has faced challenges and contradictions as some public figures, such as Heather Gay and Lizzo, have promoted weight loss drugs like Ozempic. Gay has controversially remarked that body positivity is a “big lie,” claiming, “It is better to not be overweight.”
For the Redditor, however, the issue was more about personal respect and decency rather than a broader cultural debate. It was about the pain of feeling marginalized and trivialized during a significant family gathering.
She concluded with a touch of humor despite the ordeal, “Also, I wore Spanx for 4 hours and I want compensation.”
