California’s New Stimulus Checks: Payments to Hit Bank Accounts Soon!

Stimulus payments have been a crucial tool for both federal and state governments to support citizens during times of economic downturns, rising costs, and inflation. Particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, these payments not only offered immediate financial support but also spurred spending to avoid a recession. Recently, there has been an announcement about a new $725 stimulus initiative in California.

How Stimulus Checks Help Families

Stimulus checks are generally employed during critical economic downturns. Although frequently part of state-level initiatives, federal stimulus checks are rarer. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government issued three rounds of stimulus payments from March 2020 to March 2021. The most recent tax season marked the last opportunity to claim the third check.

“Stimulus payments usually emerge when the economy severely struggles and consumers need encouragement to spend more,” explained Jacob Channel, senior economist at LendingTree, to CBS MoneyWatch in November 2024. “That’s not currently the situation.”

Recently, the U.S. stock market suffered a downturn following new tariffs introduced by the Trump Administration. Many investors worry that a prolonged trade conflict could lead to a recession; President Donald Trump, however, sees this as just a “transition period.” Furthermore, the consumer sentiment index from the University of Michigan has fallen to its lowest since November 2022. Despite these indicators, it’s improbable that the federal government will issue stimulus checks in the near future.

New $725 Stimulus Payment Initiative in California

In a state-level move, California has recently launched a new round of stimulus payments through its Family First Economic Support Pilot (FFESP). This program offers a guaranteed income to parents or legal guardians of children aged 0 to 5 living in certain areas of Sacramento County and earning below 200% of the federal poverty line. For 12 months, 200 randomly selected participants will receive $725 each month.

The FFESP aims to study the long-term impacts of providing a guaranteed income to this group. In addition to monthly payments, participants will benefit from peer support groups, monthly financial education webinars, individual financial coaching, and connections to local community organizations. The program is managed in collaboration between United Way California Capital Region and the Sacramento County Department of Child, Family, and Adult Services (DCFAS).

California has a history of pioneering in stimulus payments and social welfare initiatives, as seen in the Golden State Stimulus I & II during the pandemic. The FFESP program plans to select 200 participants for its 2025 cycle, with payments starting by mid-June of this year.

Potential $5,000 Stimulus Payment from DOGE?

For those not in California or outside the FFESP program, there might be promising news on the horizon regarding stimulus payments. The newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is rumored to be considering a $5,000 stimulus payment if they achieve their $2 trillion savings goal. This initiative is part of the agency’s effort to reduce federal spending.

However, such a payment would require Congressional approval before distribution. While a $5,000 stimulus check would be greatly appreciated by most taxpayers, many legislators argue that these funds should be used to reduce the national debt instead of being handed out to consumers. It remains to be seen whether this proposal will materialize.
