Mom Finds Love on Tinder, Ends Up Scammed Out of $40K: A Cautionary Tale

If you’re on dating apps like Tinder, watch out: your next match could be more than just a fake profile—they could be a full-blown scammer.

It’s a well-known fact that meeting people online carries its risks. While dating platforms offer great ways to connect with others, it’s crucial to navigate them with caution to sidestep potential pitfalls such as the following ordeal…

Katie Powell, a single mother, was duped into losing $40,000 by someone she encountered on Tinder.

“It’s turned my life upside down,” she disclosed to KGW.

Initially, Powell believed she had connected with a 40-year-old civil engineer based in Turkey. Their communication began with constant messaging over several weeks.

“I mean it was ongoing, constant texting right away for the first, for the entire relationship,” she recounted.

However, the narrative took a turn when the man began to request money, citing personal hardships and claiming he had no family to help him. Essentially, he was manipulating her emotions, despite never having met her in person.

“Instantly, my instinct was like, ‘Why would somebody, you’ve never met me, I’ve known you for 10 days,’” she questioned. “Why would you be asking me for money?”

Yet, the scammer managed to convince her with fake documents and a crudely edited photo of himself in a hospital bed, which she regrettably believed.

“I was questioning every single thing and knowing this is not right,” she told KGW. “But he was able to talk me into the fact that it was right.”

Initially, the scam seemed credible—at least to Powell. The scammer had apparently settled her credit card debts and transferred $750,000 into her retirement account.

But eventually, these transactions bounced and the funds disappeared, KGW reported. In the end, she found herself out more than $40,000.

“I mean it was physically, psychologically, emotionally, just draining,” Powell expressed.

Consider this a cautionary tale: never send money to someone you’ve only met online.
