Mysterious Glowing Object Spotted in Our Solar System: Could It Be Interstellar?

It seems a multitude of interstellar objects are currently en route to Earth. Maybe they’re aware of the precarious state of our planet and are coming to offer us the dubious gift of total destruction.

For some time, I—along with countless dedicated scientists and researchers—was closely monitoring an asteroid that seemed on a collision course with Earth… until, all of a sudden, it wasn’t.

But now, a new celestial object has entered our radar, heading straight for us. A well-known scientist is even suggesting it might be alien technology. Supporting this intriguing idea, the object appears to be emitting light from within itself.

Typically, only stars emit their own light, and unlike this object, stars don’t just wander through space.

The object, known as 3I/ATLAS, is only the third interstellar object detected passing through our solar system. Depending on who you ask, it might be a mere rock, a fragment from a supernova, or an alien spaceship cloaked in cosmic dust.

Is This Interstellar Object Generating Its Own Light?

Although the general scientific consensus might lean towards it being a regular comet, Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb, known for his headline-making unconventional theories, begs to differ.

What we know so far is that NASA’s Hubble telescope has observed 3I/ATLAS shining brightly, exhibiting what seems to be a coma—the halo-like cloud that forms around comets as the sun vaporizes their icy surfaces. However, peculiarly, it lacks a tail—the typical dust trail that comets leave behind as they travel away from the sun.

Instead, the object’s glow appears to be focused in front of it, akin to a flashlight beam.

Loeb, together with his colleague Eric Keto, proposes that the glow is not a reflection of sunlight but is emitted by the object itself. This suggests that the object could be smaller than expected and possibly contains radioactive material as its power source.

Loeb’s bold hypothesis suggests it might be a nuclear-powered alien spacecraft, slowly deteriorating after millennia drifting through space. It’s an extreme theory, but in the brainstorming phase, all ideas are welcome, right?

The path of 3I/ATLAS through our solar system is intriguingly close, having passed near Earth and Jupiter, as if surveying the neighborhood. Next, it’s set to make a close approach to Mars this fall. NASA plans to observe it closely with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter’s cameras.

It could well be just a comet, or perhaps it’s an ancient alien spacecraft disintegrating as it meanders through our solar system. Adding to Loeb’s theory, one might wonder what catastrophic events led to the spacecraft’s destruction in the first place.

We might not have more answers until October, but in the meantime, I’m inspired to quickly draft a science fiction novel based on these events.
