Hit a dry spell with your reading list? Sometimes, the perfect remedy is to skip the dense, literary novels and grab something fun and easy-going. Let me share with you three books that reignited my love for reading.
1. Can’t Look Away by Carola Lovering
Can’t Look Away by Carola Lovering, who also wrote Tell Me Lies, quickly became one of my top reads. Picture this: a writer and a musician, both artists, fall into a passionate, tumultuous love affair. (Reminds me of my own relationship, actually!)
Moving on.
Back in 2013, they were each making the most of their twenties in New York City. Molly was working on her debut novel while Jake toured the nation with his band, both supporting one another’s artistic endeavors.
A decade later, Molly finds herself married to another man and mothering her daughter in upscale Connecticut suburbs where she teaches yoga. Things didn’t pan out as Molly and Jake had hoped, and through a series of flashbacks, coupled with a new, unsettling friendship between Molly and a mysterious woman, their past mistakes come back to haunt them.
This novel mixes elements of thriller and romance (my favorite mix) and alternates between the past and the present. I was hooked from the start and have been chasing the reading rush I got from Can’t Look Away ever since.
2. Mary Jane by Jessica Anya Blau
Mary Jane is an incredibly refreshing yet impactful read. It centers around Mary Jane, a reserved, conservative 14-year-old from 1970s Baltimore, whose world revolves around cooking with her mom and singing in the church choir. Her summer takes an unexpected turn when she starts nannying for the daughter of a local doctor.
Despite his professional success, the doctor and his family lead a life that starkly contrasts with Mary Jane’s strict upbringing. They are eccentric, free-spirited, and embrace a liberal lifestyle, which is a shock to Mary Jane’s system.
Throughout the summer, Mary Jane is also introduced to the doctor’s patient, a recovering addict and rock star, and his movie star wife, who are staying with the family. The setup is anything but traditional, offering lessons for everyone involved.
The book describes how Mary Jane introduces orderly routines to her new household and witnesses an unfamiliar world of sex, drugs, rock-and-roll, and even group therapy. Caught between her familiar past and a newly possible future, she starts to envision a different life and identity come September.
This book was a delight to read, one I’ll surely return to many times over.
3. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han was once my favorite series. This young adult romance follows Lara Jean, a high-schooler whose life spirals when a box of her secret love letters is mistakenly sent to all her former crushes.
Lara Jean never expected anyone to read these letters; they were meant to be a private way to express her intense emotions. Now, with each recipient aware of her feelings, the introverted, shy Lara Jean is compelled to confront them, learning along the way that sometimes it’s necessary to speak up about your emotions.
Now adapted into a charming movie series, these books offer the ideal refuge for readers looking to lose themselves in a story. They provide a warm, inviting return to the joys of reading, just in time for Valentine’s Day!
