Significant reduction in solar net meter procurement rates from the government

The Government has significantly reduced solar net meter purchase rates. .

This comes amid concerns from the power division that the increase in net metering installations, mainly by affluent consumers, has disrupted the government’s plans to cover capacity costs.

The Power Division believes that the consumers have already benefited a lot from this facility and now the power sector has started to slow down.

The switch to net metering by the affluent shifts the sector’s financial burden to poorer consumers. Although the government supports the adoption of solar energy, it feels that the current buyback rates are unreasonable.

About 6000 MW of solar panels were imported until 31 March 2024 which has helped to generate 3000 MW of electricity.

In 2022, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) proposed amendments to the Alternative and Renewable Energy Generation and Net Metering Regulations, 2015 to adjust the increased power purchase rate to a national average of Rs 19.32 per unit

Despite opposition from stakeholders and users, Nepra ultimately decided against the amendments. The regulator acknowledged its role in reducing the cost of electricity, reducing foreign exchange costs and reducing losses, while supporting the government’s vision of integrating affordable and clean renewable energy sources into the energy system
