Cat-linked fungus poised to reach US: CDC warns of growing threat

U.S. health officials are watching a South American fungal outbreak that primarily affects cats and can pass to people, warning it could reach American shores. The fungus, already responsible for thousands of feline infections and more than 11,000 human cases across parts of South America, presents a growing risk to pet owners and veterinarians if it arrives here.

Known scientifically as Sporothrix brasiliensis, the organism behaves differently from many environmental fungi: infected animals can transmit the disease directly. That pattern has fueled public-health concern because the pathway from an infected animal to a human is shorter and more efficient than with many other fungal illnesses.

How the fungus moves between animals and people

This species propagates in a form that survives in animal tissue, so everyday interactions—bites, scratches, grooming—can transfer the pathogen. A senior U.S. public-health adviser recently told Science News that infected cats can contaminate surfaces with respiratory and nasal secretions that remain infectious for days to weeks, increasing the chance of indirect transmission.

In people, the infection typically shows as painful skin lesions after direct contact with an infected animal; in severe cases, especially among people with weakened immune systems, the illness can spread internally and become life-threatening.

Where outbreaks have occurred

The fungus was first identified in Brazil in the 1990s and has since been detected across several neighboring countries, including Argentina, Paraguay, Chile and Uruguay. Health authorities in the region report thousands of affected cats and over 11,000 human infections to date, underscoring sustained transmission in parts of South America.

Why U.S. officials are concerned now

Officials point to international movement of animals and a documented case in which a family relocated from Brazil to the United Kingdom and later learned their pet had been infected; a veterinarian who treated that animal also developed the disease. Those events demonstrate how travel and pet relocation can export infections beyond their original range.

At present, there are no confirmed cases of Sporothrix brasiliensis established in the United States, but public-health agencies stress vigilance because a single imported animal could seed new transmission chains.

Detection and control challenges

Public-health experts point to two practical problems. First, diagnostic options are limited outside specialized laboratories, so veterinarians and clinicians may need to rely on clinical signs and send samples to reference labs for confirmation. Second, U.S. import rules focus on outwardly apparent disease; an infected animal without obvious lesions can slip through routine checks.

These gaps make rapid identification and containment harder. Veterinary clinics, animal shelters and public-health partners are being urged to report suspicious cases and to follow infection-control guidance when handling animals with unexplained skin disease.

For now, the situation is one of preparedness rather than panic: surveillance and information-sharing are the primary tools U.S. agencies are using to prevent an incursion. Pet owners planning to bring animals from affected regions should discuss risks with a veterinarian and inform public-health authorities if they suspect exposure.

As researchers work on better diagnostic tests and public-health teams monitor international movement, the best immediate defense is awareness—among pet owners, animal-care professionals and clinicians—so possible cases are recognized and investigated promptly.
