Financial advisor 100 rules: who can compete and how rankings affect pay and reputation

By Jordan Keller

The 2026 Financial Advisor list began by reviewing data from 41,578 registered investment-adviser firms — and the process this year has the same central rule it always does: firms do not pay to be considered and inclusion rests on the list’s methodology, not on requests or fees. That matters now because rankings shape client trust and business visibility as firms plan hiring, compliance and marketing for the year ahead.

Who is considered and how it starts

Eligibility begins with the population of firms registered as RIAs. We compile a candidate pool from regulatory filings and publicly available databases, then apply screening criteria before sending surveys to a selection of firms.

Eligibility starts with RIAs’ regulatory filings and public databases.

Firms cannot nominate other firms for the list, and there is no paid application route to secure a spot. A firm can choose to opt out during the process; doing so affects only that year’s review and does not bar future consideration.

Survey invitations, deadlines and timing

In a typical year, roughly a thousand firms receive a survey — but getting one does not guarantee placement. After surveys are returned, our analysts reconcile those responses with third-party data and regulatory records before final rankings are set.

Key timing: the review and ranking work are completed in the fall, with the published list appearing in early October. Other than the first-place firm, which we may notify in advance, rankings are disclosed only when the list goes live.

We do not provide individualized explanations for why a firm was excluded or given a specific rank.

Costs, licensing and public use

There is no fee to be considered for the list. Inclusion cannot be bought.

Separate arrangements govern commercial reuse or licensing of the published list by third parties; inquiries about licensing are handled through the publisher’s official licensing channels.

How rankings are determined

The final order reflects a combination of verified firm data and weighted criteria applied consistently across candidates. Small differences in reported figures can change a firm’s position; in some cases rankings are separated by very narrow margins.

Rankings reflect weighted criteria and normalized firm data.

  • Regulatory and compliance record
  • Years in business
  • Employee headcount and structure
  • Number of registered investment advisers at the firm
  • Ratio of advisers to total employees
  • Assets under management and total accounts
  • Geographic footprint (states of registration)
  • Country of domicile

Each of those items carries an assigned weight in the scoring model. The exact weights and calculations are part of the published methodology; analysts run the model after vetting and normalizing data to prevent distortions caused by reporting differences.

Why a firm’s rank can change year to year

Movement up or down the list usually reflects one or more measurable changes: shifts in assets under management, staff growth or reductions, changes in the number of registered advisers, or updates to a firm’s regulatory record. Methodology tweaks and broader industry trends can also affect relative standings across the cohort.

Because scoring is comparative, a firm can hold steady in absolute terms yet fall if peers grow faster. Conversely, modest improvements in a few metrics can produce a notable rise when competitors’ figures slip.

Questions and next steps

For general inquiries about eligibility, timing or the methodology, reach out through the publication’s official contact or editorial channels. Firms seeking to review their public filings and internal reporting ahead of the next cycle should prioritize accurate, up-to-date disclosures — those data points are central to how rankings are calculated.
