In today’s dating scene, some men are resorting to unconventional and extreme methods to determine if their date’s interest is genuine or financially motivated. Women are increasingly speaking up against these tactics, labeling them as manipulative, disrespectful, and downright odd.
A woman recounted her experience on the now-deleted subreddit r/AITA, where she detailed a bizarre twist during what started as a normal first date. A mutual friend had introduced her to a 29-year-old man. Initially, the date proceeded as expected until it was time to settle the bill. This is when the evening took an unexpected turn.
The man passed the bill to her, insisting she pay the entire amount, which exceeded $100. While she was willing to split the bill, she quickly realized that this wasn’t just about money; it was a trap. “As soon as I paid, he flashed a big grin and exclaimed, ‘Congratulations, you passed the test! You’re not a gold digger,’” she explained in her post.
The woman confronted him, stating, “I’m not your ex, and it’s wrong for you to treat me as if I’m guilty until proven innocent. I don’t need to pass your tests to be deemed worthy.”
Other users on the subreddit were quick to support her. One commented, “This was definitely a test—to see how much disrespect you could tolerate,” while another remarked, “He doesn’t seem to offer much else, certainly not a good character.”
This incident is not an isolated case. Another woman shared a similar story in a different AITA post, where she went out with a man who initially lied about being a carpenter. He later confessed that he made up the low-income job to “test” her reaction. “He just wanted to test me,” she disclosed.
The reaction on Reddit was equally disapproving. “Not only is he untruthful and lacks communication skills, but he’s also elitist,” a user commented. Another pointed out, “His ‘test’ actually highlights his own character flaw. It shows he’s pretentious.”
Ironically, such a deception is foolish considering that trades like carpentry can be quite profitable, especially for those who are skilled and manage their own businesses.
Many are highlighting this behavior as a major red flag: beginning a potential relationship with deceit is hardly a solid foundation.
From fabricated job positions to unexpected bill presentations, women are recognizing these patterns. These so-called “tests” are not just unoriginal—they’re often projections of the tester’s own insecurities. If your date requires you to prove you’re not after their wealth even before the main course arrives, it’s likely they are the ones bringing issues to the table.
