For many years, orange cats have become a familiar presence in our lives, charming us with their unique blend of brazen foolishness and undeniable charm.
My delightful, yet slightly foolish, orange cat is no exception. A lingering question among scientists has been: what exactly makes orange cats orange?
Recently, two separate research groups, including one from Stanford and another from Japan, shared their insights in Current Biology. They discovered that a particular mutation is responsible for the distinct coloration of orange cats.
The Genetic Secret Behind Orange Cats
The study’s lead researcher, Chris Kaelin, pointed out that orange cats generate a higher amount of an orange/red pigment known as pheomelanin compared to the black/brown pigment eumelanin, somewhat similar to the way red-haired humans do.
While red-haired humans have variations in the MC1R gene accounting for their hair color, orange cats have their color due to a mutation in a gene called Arhgap36. According to the researchers, the protein this gene produces interrupts the normal pathway that dictates fur color in cats, essentially turning off eumelanin production and allowing the orange pigment to dominate.
The reason why the majority of orange cats are male ties back to their X chromosome. Males possess only one X chromosome, so if it carries the mutation, the cat will be ginger. Females, on the other hand, must have the mutation on both of their X chromosomes to exhibit the orange color fully.
Interestingly, this mutation that alters coat color does not affect other bodily functions or the brain, even though the gene is active there as well. However, this does not confirm the stereotype that orange cats are less intelligent than cats of other colors. That part remains an amusing, yet unproven, aspect of their mystique.
For the time being, it seems that their apparent silliness might just be a choice they make.
