Imagine traveling 4,000 miles from Mexico City to New York City every week just to attend law school. This striking example of dedication highlights the high cost of living in Manhattan.
Nat Cedillo, the student making this remarkable journey, has captured the attention of many with her unique commuting routine shared on TikTok.
A 4,000-Mile Weekly Commute from Mexico City to New York City for Law School
Cedillo’s Monday starts before dawn at 4:30 AM, as she scrambles to pack any overlooked items while her husband prepares her lunch and a quick breakfast. By 5 AM, she’s en route to the airport via Uber, using her wait time to study, work, and catch up on her reading.
The flight to New York takes about five hours. Cedillo manages to make it to her campus by evening, ready to attend her classes. After a full day of classes and meetings the following day, she heads to JFK Airport, catches her flight back to Mexico City, and is home by dinner time on Tuesday.
This rigorous schedule seems incredibly draining. Observers in her video’s comment section questioned whether the financial savings really justified such an exhausting routine.
In a subsequent TikTok video, Cedillo provided more details about her weekly travels. She explained, “I fly to New York on Monday mornings and return to Mexico City Tuesday evenings. I spend just one night in New York and the rest of the week with my husband in Mexico City.”
Despite the costs of flights and living expenses in Mexico City, Cedillo finds it more economical to live there and commute to New York for her two days of classes each week. She highlighted that living full-time in New York would be significantly more expensive.
Cedillo also mentioned that her husband is not a U.S. citizen and that they both hold Mexican citizenship. Their current arrangement suits them best, given her flexible schedule and their personal commitments in Mexico.
She admits, “I know this isn’t a typical lifestyle. It’s tiring and requires meticulous planning, but I’ve found the journey enjoyable, and it suits my husband and me perfectly.”
