There’s buzz that new stimulus checks could be deposited into accounts of eligible individuals soon. With living costs soaring to unprecedented levels, a federal stimulus could significantly help many manage escalating household expenses. The last federal stimulus of this scale was during the COVID-19 crisis, consisting of three rounds to alleviate the pandemic’s economic impact.
Living Costs Hit Record Highs
Speculation about a forthcoming $2,000 stimulus check is making rounds as living costs continue to worry Americans across the nation. With the Trump administration surpassing 100 days in office during President Trump’s second non-consecutive term, many had hoped for a decrease in living expenses. However, despite global tensions from President Trump’s tariffs, the cost of living remains high for many.
“I thought this year would bring significant improvements,” Traci Dixon, a 37-year-old certified nursing assistant, told USA Today. She worked through Election Day and missed voting last year. “But there’s already a lot of negativity and it’s only April.”
President Trump has recently intensified tariffs on several countries, including trade partners like Canada and Mexico. A minimum 10% tariff will be applied broadly, with some countries facing tariffs as high as 50%. The president believes these tariffs will boost tax revenues, motivate Americans to buy domestically produced goods, and attract substantial foreign investments to the U.S. However, many economists are predicting a recession given the current economic conditions.
Potential for a New $2,000 Stimulus Check?
There is no official confirmation that a $2,000 stimulus check will be issued this month. Confirmed payments for this month include regular Social Security benefits, specific state social program initiatives, and a double round of Supplementary Security Income (SSI) payments to recipients, among others.
Social Security benefits follow a precise payment schedule. Recipients will receive their usual payments from retirement, disability, and SSI funds. Notably, SSI recipients will receive a double payment since the June SSI payment date falls on a Sunday, leading to an early distribution on May 30.
Other state-specific initiatives, such as California’s Family First Economic Support Pilot, will also continue. These programs are local to specific states or counties. For instance, the Family First Economic Support Pilot in California aims to support families living below 200% of the federal poverty line.
Stay Informed Through Trusted Sources
During periods of economic distress like the current cost-of-living crisis, scammers may attempt to exploit vulnerabilities by pretending to offer stimulus payments in exchange for personal financial information. It’s crucial to only trust updates from official governmental sources and never disclose your banking information online.
If such a payment were to be approved, the eligibility criteria would likely be similar to past stimulus efforts, targeting individuals earning less than $75,000 annually. Higher earners, particularly those making over $100,000, typically do not qualify for these stimulus payments. If you’re in this income bracket, any forthcoming stimulus likely won’t affect you.
