Stimulus payments are a critical method used by state and federal governments to provide immediate financial aid directly to citizens. Although these disbursements are typically one-time measures and don’t offer long-term economic support for vulnerable families, they serve as crucial short-term relief while more enduring solutions are developed. This month, a new round of payments is scheduled to be distributed to qualified recipients.
Immediate Assistance Through Stimulus Payments
In periods of economic downturn, stimulus payments help not only individuals and families in need to manage urgent costs but also stimulate the economy by boosting spending, which helps avert a recession. During the COVID-19 pandemic, these payments were vital in addressing both these aspects.
From March 2020 to March 2021, under the Biden Administration, three rounds of Economic Impact Payments (EIPs) were issued to eligible Americans. These funds were critical during a time when unemployment levels soared to rates seen only during the Great Depression. The recent tax season marked the final chance to claim the third EIP, which provided $1,400, for those who hadn’t previously received it in 2021.
This Month’s New $725 Stimulus Check
Despite speculation about potential $2,000 and $5,000 one-time payments under the Trump Administration, no such broad federal stimulus measures have been officially announced. However, a new initiative known as the Big, Beautiful Bill under the Trump Administration is set to distribute $1,000 through ‘Trump Accounts’ for families with newborns from 2025 to 2028. These payments aim to encourage parents to save for their child’s future education and allow annual contributions of up to $5,000.
While Trump Accounts are a federal effort, California has started issuing its stimulus checks as part of the Family First Economic Support Pilot Program. This groundbreaking state initiative tests the viability of a guaranteed basic income by distributing $725 in the first wave of payments, which began in June and will continue annually.
Randomly selected families earlier this year are participating in the pilot. Eligibility required participants to:
- Live in specific zip codes within Sacramento County: 95815, 95821, 95823, 95825, 95828, or 95838
- Be a parent or legal guardian of a child aged 0-5 years living with you at least 50% of the time
- Have a household income below 200% of the poverty line
- Not participate in any other guaranteed income programs
Stimulus Initiatives Across Other States
California is not alone; other states are also implementing their stimulus strategies this year. New York, for example, is extending its stimulus efforts, including one-time inflation rebate checks and new BABY payments aimed at supporting low-income families that have recently had a baby, helping to alleviate the initial high costs of newborn care.
In Alaska, the established Permanent Dividend Fund (PDF) continues to disburse payments to residents, derived from the state’s earnings from oil and precious mineral reserves. This year, each of the 600,000 qualifying residents receives $1,702, an increase from the previous year. Most eligible beneficiaries should have received their payments by now, with the final disbursements scheduled for no later than August 21.
