American Dream 2025: What’s the Price Tag for Success?

By Miles Harper

The cost of pursuing the American Dream has skyrocketed, so much so that it might just stun you into spilling your iced coffee.

According to a recent study by Investopedia, the estimated cost to achieve the American ideal of success by 2025 is a staggering $5,043,323. This figure is up nearly $600,000 from last year and represents an increase of about 50 percent from two years prior.

This hefty sum encompasses what many consider essential milestones of a successful life: homeownership, raising children, funding their education, saving for retirement, covering wedding expenses, enjoying vacations, and even caring for a couple of pets. “The financial goals that most Americans view as attainable are not only becoming pricier but are also growing faster than inflation, making them increasingly elusive for many,” Caleb Silver, editor-in-chief at Investopedia, explained to the New York Post.

Certain costs are accelerating more rapidly than others. For instance, preparing for retirement is now estimated to cost around $1.63 million, up by $40,000 from 2024. The expenses involved in raising two children and sending them to college are projected to be about $876,092. Wedding expenses average around $38,200, and the cost of replacing a car every five years over a period of five decades totals $900,346—nearly $90,000 more than the previous year’s figure.

The dream of homeownership is also becoming more expensive due to rising mortgage rates and property prices, now totaling $957,594.

A significant new addition to this year’s calculation is healthcare costs. For the first time, Investopedia has included an estimate for lifetime medical expenses, which come in at $414,208. When combined with $180,621 for vacations and $39,381 for pet care, the financial burden becomes even heavier, turning even the family cat into a luxury.

The harsh reality is that many Americans will not even come close to earning $5 million in their entire working lives. “The truth is, the majority of us will never come close to earning $5 million throughout our adult working years,” Silver acknowledged. Despite this, optimism remains surprisingly robust, with nearly 70% of Americans believing they will achieve these milestones or have already done so.

While many in the U.S. continue to pursue the Dream, the price tag of over $5 million makes it an increasingly difficult investment to justify.
