Many couples invest considerable effort in repairing their relationships. They try everything from date nights and counseling to improving communication—all in the hopes of reigniting the emotional connection. However, experts suggest that one of the most effective ways to maintain a joyful and enduring relationship is also one of the most straightforward: kissing.

“Kissing is the most underrated tool in a relationship,” noted Mariah Freya, a sex educator and co-founder of Beducated, in a discussion with The Daily Mail. While many couples focus on the frequency and quality of their sexual interactions or how well they talk to each other, the importance of regular, meaningful kissing often goes unnoticed.

Freya points out that when couples prioritize meaningful kissing rather than treating it as a mere formality, there’s a distinct shift in the relationship. “It switches your mind from a simple greeting to a deeper connection. Suddenly, your partner appears more appealing,” she explained.

The Bonding Power of Kissing

Research supports this claim. A 2020 study found a correlation between frequent kissing and high levels of relationship satisfaction. Another survey from 2011 revealed that one in five married couples had not kissed in the past week, and those who did shared brief kisses that lasted no more than five seconds.

Brie Temple, Chief Matchmaker at Tawkify, views the decrease in kissing as a red flag. She told The Daily Mail, “A decline in kissing often indicates emotional disconnection. Without these intimate moments, couples may start to feel like mere roommates.”

According to Sunaree Ko, a love and compatibility expert, kissing is more crucial than many realize. She argues that a lack of kissing can lead to misunderstandings, feelings of being undervalued, and emotional distance, especially during stressful times.

Kissing offers benefits that extend beyond physical touch. Licensed sexologist Sofie Roos explains that kissing triggers a chemical reaction in the brain. Oxytocin boosts trust and bonding, dopamine increases feelings of euphoria, and serotonin regulates mood, sleep, and emotional wellbeing.

“Activating these three chemicals recreates the emotional exhilaration of falling in love,” Roos stated.

Some couples integrate kissing into their daily routines, making time for it both in the morning and at night. Ko suggests that these small acts are powerful, acting as a ‘reset button’ that requires no words, planning, or troubleshooting.

If your relationship feels distant, perhaps it’s not another heart-to-heart that’s needed, but rather a meaningful kiss to bridge the gap.
