Get Ready for a Thanksgiving Bonus from Social Security
The Social Security Administration (SSA) is known for its prompt monthly payments to numerous beneficiaries, mostly retirees. These payments are consistently issued according to a precise schedule. With the holiday season approaching, it’s wise to check if your payment arrives before Thanksgiving to help manage the anticipated higher expenses during this period.
Millions Rely on SSA’s Financial Support
Every month, around 75 million people receive payments from the SSA. While most of these payments are for retirement, the SSA also assists individuals with Disability and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Each program has specific eligibility requirements. Disability and SSI are dependent on income levels, whereas Retirement benefits are provided to eligible recipients regardless of other income sources.
The benefits are issued on a strict monthly schedule:
- Second Wednesday of the month: for those born between the 1st and 10th of the month.
- Third Wednesday of the month: for those born between the 11th and 20th of the month.
- Fourth Wednesday of the month: for those born between the 21st and the last day of the month.
SSI payments are always made on the first of the month. For those receiving both Retirement and SSI benefits, Retirement payments are made on the third of the month, unless you claimed your benefits before May 1997, in which case your payment schedule will also follow this date.
Securing SSA Benefits in Time for Thanksgiving
According to the SSA’s payment calendar, beneficiaries with birthdays from the 11th to the 20th and from the 21st to the 31st of any month will receive their payments on Wednesday, November 19th, and Wednesday, November 26th, respectively. This timing is perfect as Thanksgiving falls on November 27th this year.
The maximum Retirement benefit from the SSA this year is $5,108, although achieving this requires meeting specific criteria. Most recipients receive considerably less, with the average monthly Retirement benefit around $2,000.
November Adjustments to SSA’s Schedule
While deviations from the SSA’s schedule are rare, adjustments are made when payment dates fall on weekends or public holidays. For instance, this month, SSI payments were issued at the end of October instead of November 1st because the latter fell on a weekend. Therefore, no SSI payments will be distributed in November, with the next batch scheduled for December 1st.
Looking ahead to next year, significant updates are expected. The newly announced cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) of 2.8% will apply for 2026, increasing all SSA benefits to help them keep pace with inflation. However, some beneficiaries are concerned that the COLA, which reflects the spending patterns of wage earners, may not accurately represent the needs of retirees.
