Why Fairy Smut is Taking Over: The Steamy Trend Explained!

By Miles Harper

As the leaves turn and the air chills, many avid readers are snuggling into their sofas with a hot cup of tea and diving into some captivating reads. However, the content of these books, with their intriguing plots and characters, might just catch you off guard.

It’s evident that there’s a growing trend towards dark fantasy romance and what fans on book-related social platforms refer to as “fairy smut.” It appears that the allure of mysterious, often malevolent, supernatural beings is overshadowing the charm of regular human protagonists in these narratives.

Joi AI, a pioneering platform for AI-driven relationships, conducted an analysis on thousands of its digitally created characters and discovered that approximately one out of every ten characters can be classified as “seductive fantasy beings.” This group includes a variety of characters like demonic entities, vampire seducers, succubi, and mystical elves.

Yikes.

What’s the Appeal of Fairy Smut?

What does this intriguing trend reveal about our society?

It seems that there’s a mounting fascination with the fantastical. While it’s true that even human characters in romance novels are often nothing like people we encounter in reality—being idealized and romanticized versions—the introduction of non-human characters adds an entirely new dimension to the stories.

This leads us to ponder whether the realities of dating are so daunting that fictional creatures provide a preferable alternative to human partners.

Indeed, it appears so—and honestly, it’s hardly surprising. Have you tried navigating modern dating apps? No matter your gender or sexual orientation, it’s a battleground.

Yet, the data suggests that the attraction to these non-human characters isn’t driven by their potential as ideal partners. Many of them are depicted as violent, troubled, or domineering—traits that are generally undesirable in a real-world context.

Nonetheless, within the confines of a fictional universe brimming with erotic tension, these characters offer a form of escapism. They’re appealing precisely because they pose no real threat.

“We all have a penchant for the ‘bad’ ones, even if they aren’t human,” remarks Jaime Bronstein, LCSW, a relationship therapist with Joi AI. “The allure of vampires, demons, and other dominant beings is linked to their embodiment of danger and control.”

From a safe distance and in fictional scenarios, these dynamics allow readers to explore complex themes of power, fear, and ethics comfortably.

“Engaging with these characters through a screen lets us toy with elements of power, erotic fear, and ethical ambiguity without real-world consequences,” Bronstein explains.

Is Engaging with Fantasy Characters Normal, or Is It Risky?

This form of engagement offers a way to experience and interact with these fantastical elements without genuine risk. Known as “symbolic enactment,” this type of escapism serves almost like a ritual, allowing individuals to explore their fantasies safely.

“It’s a natural and healthy human desire,” asserts Bronstein.

“These fantasy figures tap into what is known as the ‘supernormal stimulus’—a brain response that craves exaggerated forms of our desires, like youth, strength, and beauty. Fantasy characters deliver these attributes in their most intensified forms,” she adds.

So, what are your thoughts on this phenomena? Are we navigating towards potential issues, or are we merely indulging in a harmless form of escape from the grim realities of today’s dating landscape?
