Bald eagle Jackie rushed to wildlife hospital after vanishing: found critically injured

By Miles Harper

An internet-famous bald eagle known as Jackie, watched for years on a live camera, disappeared for several days before being found near Big Bear Lake in Southern California. The bird was rescued alive but injured, and wildlife rehabilitators say her recovery could take time.

Rescue and condition

Witnesses reported seeing an adult eagle fend off two younger birds with its talons, then remain grounded. Responders from the Los Angeles County Parks Department’s San Dimas Raptor Rescue Team reached the scene and brought the bird to the Ojai Raptor Center for treatment.

Staff initially had to confirm the eagle’s identity because she isn’t banded. Experts and members of the public compared photos and livestream footage to verify that the bird was, in fact, Jackie — one half of the widely followed Jackie and Shadow pair.

The raptor is in serious but stable condition. Veterinarians report severe anemia and signs of kidney inflammation, and additional testing is underway to determine the causes. Despite her injuries, Jackie is alert, perching and accepting food with help; Friends of Big Bear Valley noted on Facebook that she remains feisty and responsive to caregivers.

Why millions care

For many viewers, Jackie isn’t just a wild bird — she’s been a regular presence on a livestream that has documented nesting seasons, chick raisings and the pair’s behavior since 2018. That long-running visibility has turned casual watchers into invested followers, so her disappearance prompted an unusually large public reaction and coordinated search effort.

Identification challenges in this case underscore a broader issue in wildlife monitoring: unbanded birds are harder to track, and community vigilance — photos, video and eyewitness reports — can play a decisive role in locating and rescuing animals.

  • Location found: Near Big Bear Lake, San Bernardino Mountains
  • Rescue team: Los Angeles County Parks Department — San Dimas Raptor Rescue Team
  • Rehab center: Ojai Raptor Center
  • Medical issues: Severe anemia; kidney inflammation; further testing planned
  • Identification: Unbanded — public photos and livestream footage used to confirm identity

Next steps and implications

Rehabilitation can be a slow process. Veterinarians will continue diagnostics and supportive care to address the anemia and kidney concerns. Successful recovery will hinge on the underlying cause of the conditions and how well she responds to treatment.

Beyond one bird’s fate, this episode highlights how digital wildlife cameras change public relationships with animals and how crowdsourced observation can aid conservation and rescue work. Followers of the Jackie and Shadow stream are now watching for official updates from rehabilitators, hoping the familiar face returns to the nest.
