Check Your Bank Account Now: Surprise Deposits for Selected Individuals Today!

By Calvin Baxter

Today, it’s worth checking your bank account for a new deposit from the Social Security Administration (SSA). Serving roughly 70 million recipients, the SSA disburses payments throughout the month based on eligibility rather than a single date. A fresh payment is scheduled for release today, so make sure to see if you’re among the recipients.

Understanding SSA’s Payment Schedule

Known for its reliability, the SSA has never failed to send out payments on time, maintaining this record through global crises such as World Wars and pandemics. Depending on the type of benefit you receive—Retirement, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), or Disability—the payment dates vary.

For those who are not SSI recipients, the payment schedule for Retirement and Disability benefits is typically as follows:

  • Payments on the second Wednesday for those born between the 1st and 10th of the month.
  • Payments on the third Wednesday for those born between the 11th and 20th of the month.
  • Payments on the fourth Wednesday for those born between the 21st and 31st of the month.

SSI recipients, on the other hand, always receive their benefits on the first of each month. If you get both Retirement and SSI benefits, your Retirement payments are issued on the third of the month instead of following the usual schedule. Additionally, beneficiaries who started receiving SSA benefits before May 1997 are also paid on the third of each month.

Who Receives Payments Today, September 17?

According to the official Social Security payment calendar, today, September 17, marks the release of the first round of Retirement and Disability benefits for non-SSI recipients born between the 1st and 10th of a month. The specific amount you receive depends on various factors, as there is no standard payment for everyone.

The maximum possible Retirement benefit is currently $5,108, but reaching this amount requires delaying your benefit claims until age 70 and having contributed the maximum Social Security taxes for at least 35 years. Most people, however, receive around $2,000 on average.

Upcoming Changes in Payment Dates

The SSA usually adheres strictly to its payment calendar unless a scheduled date falls on a weekend or public holiday. This month, SSI payments were moved to August 29 since September 1 coincided with Labor Day. A similar adjustment is expected next month for October’s benefits.

Next month, SSI recipients will see a double payment: they’ll receive their regular benefits on the first as usual, but they’ll also receive an advance payment for November on October 31, since November 1 is a weekend day. Additionally, all SSA beneficiaries should pay attention to October 15, when the annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) rates will be announced, affecting benefit increases for the fiscal year 2026.
