An individual in China found himself in the emergency room, drenched in sweat, visibly pale, and holding his abdomen in agony. The cause of his distress was as bizarre as a scene from a chilling horror film: a live eel measuring one foot in length was discovered inside him.
The Huaihua Daily reported that the 33-year-old man was rushed to the First Affiliated Hospital of Hunan Medical University due to intense abdominal pain. His abdomen was unusually firm, which prompted the medical team to perform immediate diagnostic imaging. The results of a CT scan unveiled a shocking sight—an object that seemed to have perforated his intestines and made its way into his abdominal cavity.
Without delay, the medical team performed laparoscopic surgery on the man. It was during this procedure that they encountered the shocking culprit: a live eel was found actively swimming inside his abdominal cavity.
The eel had managed to penetrate completely through the wall of the man’s intestine and entered the abdominal area, posing a serious risk of fatal peritonitis. The surgeons managed to remove the eel using a surgical clamp, sealed the entry wound in the sigmoid colon, and thoroughly cleansed the area with saline to minimize infection risks.
Eel Discovered Alive Inside Man’s Abdomen
Following the surgery, the patient showed good recovery and was soon discharged from the hospital. The fate of the eel after its removal, however, remains unmentioned.
While the medical staff handled the situation with utmost professionalism, the online community had a field day with speculations and jokes. Comments ranged from humorous guesses about the eel’s entry method to sarcastic remarks. Despite the jests, how the eel ended up inside the man’s body was not disclosed, although it’s well-known that eels have a natural propensity to burrow through soft substrates, apparently including intestinal walls.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first account of aquatic animals being found in human bodies. Various incidents from Asia have reported the presence of eels, fish, and other marine life in unlikely human cavities, often as a result of accidents, traditional remedies, or more dubious reasons. Medical professionals warn that such incidents carry a high risk of severe internal infections.
Eels, especially those that inhabit swamps and canals in rural parts of China, are adept at navigating tight spaces. Their ability combined with human curiosity or desperation can lead to emergency room visits that most would be reluctant to confess to.
In this incident, the man fortunately recovered completely, but the bizarre image of a live eel navigating through human organs is likely to linger in the memories of the hospital staff—and perhaps among netizens as well.
