Teen Girl Pregnant After Oral Sex: How Is That Possible?

By Miles Harper

Live Science, a platform dedicated to uncovering scientific news, occasionally brings to light unusual and shocking medical histories that have been obscured over time. This week, they’ve unearthed a particularly chilling tale. Please be advised, the following content discusses themes of underage sexual activity and violence against women.

The incident occurred in 1988 in South Africa. A 15-year-old girl visited a hospital complaining of abdominal pain. Upon examination, doctors informed her that she was experiencing labor contractions due to her being nine months pregnant. The baby was positioned head-down in the birth canal and she was on the verge of giving birth.

What made the situation extraordinarily peculiar was the fact that the girl had never had penetrative sex. In fact, she was physically unable to due to a rare medical condition known as Distal Vaginal Atresia, where the vaginal opening is sealed by skin, leaving only a small dimple where the opening should be. This condition affects approximately 1 in 4,000 to 10,000 female newborns.

To deliver the baby, doctors administered spinal anesthesia and performed a cesarean section, successfully delivering a healthy baby boy. However, the mystery of how the pregnancy occurred in the first place remained, given her condition which should have made conception impossible.

The Unbelievable Case of Pregnancy Following Oral Sex

This next part of the story is deeply unsettling. After the emergency cesarean procedure, the girl revealed to a nurse that nine months prior, she was engaged in oral sex with her boyfriend when her ex-boyfriend appeared and attacked her. Enraged, he stabbed her in the upper abdomen, resulting in two stab wounds. She was treated at a hospital and then discharged.

Her medical team hypothesized that the stab wounds might have created a passageway for the semen to travel from her stomach to her reproductive organs. Normally, stomach acid would destroy sperm, but the doctors speculated that her malnourished state at the time might have reduced her stomach acid’s effectiveness, allowing the sperm to survive and enter her reproductive system through the injuries inflicted by the stabbing.
