Home Cafes Surge in Popularity: Is Coffee Outing Becoming a Luxury?

By Miles Harper

As coffee prices soar, enthusiasts are finding innovative ways to enjoy their brew.

Recently, we’ve seen egg prices skyrocket, leading many to remove eggs from their shopping lists temporarily.

Similarly, coffee is another beloved item that is becoming increasingly expensive.

Government statistics show that the retail cost of ground coffee hit $7 per pound in January, marking a significant 75 percent hike since January 2020.

Yannis Apostolopoulos, the CEO of the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), explained to Food & Wine in January that the surging prices are due to a mix of global issues including climate change, economic strains, and geopolitical instability.

Consequently, coffee shops are raising their prices. Depending on your location, a visit to a local coffee shop could see you paying more than $7 for a single latte. This might make you think twice and consider brewing your coffee at home instead.

Indeed, many coffee drinkers are already making this shift.

Consider TikToker Vic Lauren, who transformed her apartment into a personal cafe.

Innovative Coffee Enthusiasts Turn to Home Cafes Amid Rising Costs

Lauren went all out, creating menus and signs for her “Saturday Cafe,” decorating with fresh flowers, and preparing baked goods and homemade lattes to mimic the coffee shop experience for her friends and family.

While I typically head to local cafes to focus on my writing, I find that setting up a cafe-like atmosphere at home with soothing music might just replicate that conducive environment. This not only helps save money but also sparks creativity and enhances enjoyment of life’s simpler pleasures.
