Many of us depend on our morning coffee—or several throughout the day—to help us shake off sleepiness and power through the afternoon lull. However, there are times when even multiple cups of coffee seem ineffective against our overwhelming tiredness.

This pervasive sense of exhaustion can stem from excessive workloads, financial stress, mental health struggles, or simply the demands of everyday life. Even after downing several cups of coffee, it’s common to still feel drained.

Interestingly, there are strategies to enhance the invigorating effects of caffeine. One effective tactic is to indulge in a “coffee nap.”

According to the Sleep Foundation, a coffee nap entails drinking a cup of coffee followed by a short nap. This combination maximizes alertness. “A nap of about 15-20 minutes allows enough time for the caffeine to take effect,” they note.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that caffeine usually takes 15 to 45 minutes to begin working. This duration is perfect for a brief nap, just before the caffeine’s effects start to manifest. However, it’s advised not to let these naps exceed 30 minutes, as longer naps might cause sleep inertia, or grogginess.

“By pairing the stimulative impact of caffeine with the rejuvenating quality of a short nap, coffee naps create a synergistic effect that enhances alertness and sharpens mental clarity,” explains Kristina Lenker, Ph.D., a sleep psychologist and assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at Penn State. Numerous studies support the benefits of this practice for improving alertness and cognitive performance.
