This past weekend, I unexpectedly found myself “soft clubbing”…
After a week-long family beach vacation filled with drinks, food, and lounging under the sun, I was wiped out by Friday. However, I had a bachelorette party to attend.
Arriving at the girls’ Airbnb on Friday evening, rallying seemed almost impossible. Having just turned 30, I’ve always found it hard to keep pace. I’m naturally a homebody, and my idea of a good time usually ends by 9 p.m.
Nevertheless, I had to at least attempt to keep up with the rest of the group. And I managed to do so, at least for the first night and most of the following day.
After spending Saturday afternoon bar-hopping and day-drinking, I snuck away from our outdoor gathering for a peaceful nap in my bunk bed. Later, when the others woke me up to prepare for another night out starting at 10:30 p.m., I brewed a large cup of coffee and downed it. No tequila shots or spiked seltzers for me—I needed caffeine (and water, but let’s not dwell on that).
Raves Step Aside—‘Soft Clubbing’ Emerges as the New Nightlife Wave
Whether I actually went out that night is irrelevant (I did try!), but one thing was clear: coffee is an excellent pre-game choice. Why continue to consume alcohol when you’re already spent? Why exceed your limits when you’re barely dragging yourself around? And frankly, I’d choose a latte over something like cocaine—a common stimulant used to maintain energy. I’d much rather sip on coffee and be fully present.
And it seems many others feel the same way. In fact, the popularity of soft clubbing events, including coffee clubbing and morning dance parties, is on the rise for these reasons. It’s a trend I’m all for.
Defining Soft Clubbing
Soft clubbing is a social activity that focuses more on health and wellness rather than on alcohol and drugs. It enhances your body rather than harming it, all while you enjoy time with friends and family.
Eventbrite’s recent insights highlight several key shifts in soft clubbing:
- Moving away from alcohol and drugs.
- Addressing economic realities by focusing on more affordable events.
- Fostering genuine connections through immersive experiences like entertainment, art, and music, without compromising wellness or personal values.
- Offering safer, more inclusive socializing options.
According to Eventbrite, soft clubbing is quickly becoming a norm, with Coffee Clubbing events increasing by 478%. This is part of a broader set of “soft clubbing” events, which also includes Thermal Gatherings like sauna raves (up 256%) and Morning Dance Parties (increased by 20%).
Truth be told, morning raves suit me better than night-time ones.
I can be the life of the party until late in the evening. But once midnight hits, I’m like Cinderella without her magic. My energy is gone, and I’m ready to drop, even if it’s on a beer-soaked floor of a local bar.
Exploring the Popularity of Soft Clubbing
So, why this shift? It appears more people are setting boundaries and prioritizing their well-being. I’ve always found it odd that people are expected to poison themselves and ignore their body’s distress signals for the sake of “partying.” But I’ll save that discussion for another time.
Many are now choosing “soft clubbing” not to avoid socializing altogether, but to engage in it in their own tailored ways. Instead of costly, tiring nights out, they opt for revitalizing events that focus on well-being, connections, and health. This is part of a wider surge (92%) in interest for sober-curious gatherings.
“This movement isn’t about relinquishing something—it’s about choosing more,” says Roseli Ilano, Eventbrite’s Head of Community & Trends Expert. “More awareness, more intention, more joy. Gen Z is redefining what it means to go out, preferring experiences that nourish both body and soul as much as they entertain.”
