Lion Attack: Escaped Pet Mauls Mother and Two Kids in Shocking Incident!

By Miles Harper

Often, when I delve into a peculiar news item, I feel compelled to give advice to those who are unlikely to heed it. For instance, if you decide to keep a pet lion, at the very least, make sure it’s securely confined so it doesn’t escape and harm an unsuspecting passerby. However, I suspect that anyone who keeps a pet lion probably isn’t one to follow sensible suggestions.

Last Thursday, a pet lion broke free from a farmhouse in Johar Town, located in Pakistan’s Punjab region. The animal leaped over a wall and launched an attack on a woman and two children who were passing by in a nearby alley.

The three victims sustained facial and arm injuries but survived the attack. Eventually, a bystander managed to drive the lion away by pursuing it with an unspecified object. The incident was recorded on a nearby CCTV camera.

The authorities later confirmed that the lion had been kept in an unsecured cage on private property without the necessary permits, clearly breaching Pakistan’s Wildlife Act. Following the attack, the owners attempted to flee to another district with the lion, soon realizing that concealing a lion is no easy task.

The police were able to apprehend three individuals associated with the incident. The lion was subsequently handed over to the local wildlife officials.

The owners now potentially face a sentence of up to seven years in jail or could be fined around $17,000. Authorities are advocating for the severest punishment available. This incident marks the first of its kind reported this year.

In Pakistan, it’s not uncommon for the wealthy to keep big cats as symbols of status, despite urban regulations and licensing requirements against such practices. In a related report by the BBC earlier this year, a well-known Pakistani YouTuber was mandated by a court to produce animal welfare videos after being penalized for owning a lion cub.

The phenomenon of the ultra-rich flaunting exotic pets is a globally recognized issue, eliciting headshakes and sighs from people everywhere.
