A visit to Yellowstone National Park ended unfavorably for a man from Florida. According to a press release by the National Park Service, the 47-year-old visitor encountered a serious situation involving a bison in the Lake Village area of Wyoming.
The agency reported that the man was gored by the bison after getting too close to the animal. He received immediate medical attention on site and fortunately, his injuries were minor.
The National Park Service took this incident as an opportunity to remind all park visitors about the importance of maintaining safe distances from wildlife. They advise keeping at least 25 yards away from large animals like bison and elk, and at least 100 yards from predators such as bears and wolves. Additionally, they stressed that if wildlife comes close, it is the responsibility of the visitor to move away to maintain a safe distance.
The park service also noted, “Bison are known to protect their space when they feel threatened and have historically caused more injuries to people in Yellowstone than any other animal. Their behavior can be unpredictable, and they are capable of moving up to three times faster than humans can run.”
Historical Context of Bison Encounters
While incidents involving bison are not common, they do occur. This particular event marks the first bison-related injury reported this year. According to park records, there were two such incidents in 2024, one in 2023, and three in 2022.
Earlier in 2024, a man reportedly ventured too close to a bison herd and even went as far as to kick one of the bison. He ended up with minor injuries following the encounter.
This individual was later apprehended and faced multiple charges, including endangering himself and others while under the influence, engaging in disorderly conduct, approaching wildlife too closely, and disturbing wildlife. He has pleaded not guilty to these allegations.
Another incident in 2024 involved an 83-year-old woman who found herself extremely close to a bison. The animal lifted her briefly off the ground with its horns, resulting in serious injuries for her.
