Following the Trump Administration’s electoral win in November 2024, it shocked many by appointing Tesla’s Elon Musk as the leader of the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a consultancy group aimed at trimming unnecessary federal expenditures. However, recent buzz suggests that Musk might be on his way out of this role soon.
Understanding Musk’s Position at DOGE
In a bold move, the Trump Administration appointed Musk to lead DOGE, targeting a $2 trillion reduction in federal expenditures. Despite being an advisory group rather than a federal department, DOGE has faced scrutiny for its role in government, particularly after making deep cuts to USAID, which drew international backlash.
The federal debt currently stands at about $36 trillion. Proponents of DOGE argue that the agency plays a crucial role in ensuring tax dollars are used efficiently. President Trump has previously expressed intentions to slash programs that don’t align with his administration’s policies and to decrease the federal workforce.
“The people voted for major government reform and that’s what they’re going to receive,” Musk declared at the Oval Office while defending DOGE’s extensive spending cuts on February 11. “They’re getting exactly what they asked for.”
Is Musk Departing from the Administration?
Speculation has arisen about Musk’s imminent departure from the Administration. However, this seems to be related to the limitations placed on special government employees, who can only work for 130 days. Musk is nearing the end of his tenure, expected to conclude in May.
In a post on X, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt corrected a report suggesting Musk would be “stepping back” from his role. The confusion might also be due to President Trump’s recent comments to the press regarding Musk’s future:
“I think he’s been fantastic, but he also has a major company to run … And eventually, he’ll have to return. He wants to,” remarked President Trump to reporters. “I’d keep him as long as possible,” he added.
Tesla Under Fire in Various Markets
Lately, Musk has faced criticism not only for his governmental role. The leading electric vehicle manufacturer recently initiated two vehicle recalls—the first concerning the well-known Cybertruck and the second involving the Model S and Model X vehicles. The Cybertruck recall impacted 46,000 vehicles, while the Model S and Model X recall involved 91 vehicles. Notifications for both recalls are scheduled to be sent to owners by the end of May. These vehicles are to be repaired by Tesla at no additional charge to the owners.
Moreover, Tesla has recently been hit hard by new policies in British Columbia, following the U.S. imposition of tariffs on products from Canada and Mexico. In retaliation, British Columbia has excluded Tesla cars from its electric vehicle rebate program. The new U.S. tariffs have drawn significant international criticism, with many arguing they disrupt global commerce and could hinder economic growth. Critics and economists warn that such tariffs could lead to higher consumer prices and strain diplomatic ties between the U.S. and its trade partners.
