The newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), announced by the Trump administration, has been the center of attention since its inception. The appointment of Tesla’s Elon Musk as the leader of the advisory division sparked controversy, as did the extent of DOGE’s access to data from other agencies. The board has been both criticized and commended, and now, DOGE is preparing to distribute new payments to eligible recipients.
DOGE’s Function within the U.S. Government
The establishment of DOGE by the Trump administration is a strategic move. Acting as an advisory body, DOGE’s main purpose is to suggest ways the government can eliminate wasteful spending and reduce federal expenses.
While many supporters applaud the initiative for its potential to optimize the use of taxpayer dollars, critics are wary of the significant influence wielded by Musk, who is not an elected official.
In its brief tenure under the Trump administration, DOGE has proposed significant changes aimed at reducing the federal workforce. The group has a timeline of 18 months to fulfill its mission before it disbands in July 2026. Initiatives cut include DEI programs, consulting contracts, and federal building leases. According to its website, DOGE claims to have already saved $55 billion in unnecessary spending, though this figure is unverified.
Potential $5,000 Stimulus Payment from DOGE
Despite its focus on spending cuts, there is unexpected buzz about a potential stimulus payment from DOGE. James Fishback, CEO of the Azoria investment firm, has proposed a $5,000 stimulus check for eligible individuals, a proposal currently under consideration by President Trump.
In an interview with Newsweek, Fishback stated:
“I have ongoing discussions with folks in the administration, and I’ve had ongoing discussions with folks on the Hill. I spoke with six US senators this past week and continue those conversations to get feedback. And it’s been overwhelmingly positive. The next step is there’s going to be a bill, and the bill is coming very soon.”
However, for this proposal to take effect, DOGE must first achieve its ambitious goal of saving $2 trillion. Trump and DOGE have indicated that 20% of these savings could be distributed to American citizens if the target is met.
Legislative Approval Needed for DOGE Checks
It’s important to note that the issuance of $5,000 checks would need Congressional approval. Many legislators oppose the idea, believing that any savings should be used to reduce the national debt.
House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed his concerns at a February conference:
“Politically, it would be great for us, you know, because everybody gets a check. But think about our core principles, right? Fiscal responsibility is what we stand for as conservatives. That’s our brand, and we’re dealing with a $36 trillion federal debt and a massive deficit. I think we need to pay down the credit card, right?”
Controversies Continue in the Trump Administration
DOGE is just one aspect of the ongoing controversies facing the new Trump Administration. The recent tariffs imposed on goods from Canada and Mexico have sparked further backlash, affecting Musk’s own business interests. In retaliation, Musk suggested on the social media platform X that Canada should be blocked from accessing SpaceX and Starlink services.
