“Follow the Leader”: A Deep Dive into Unconventional American Subcultures
The documentary series Follow the Leader spans four episodes, each delving into unique, often radical communities across the Americas. Hosted by Jamali Maddix, the series provides an insightful look into groups ranging from vigilante predator hunters and the so-called “Passport Bros” seeking royal treatment abroad, to the AR15-admiring devotees of the Rod of Iron Ministries.
Throughout the series, Maddix engages with the influential personalities and proponents of these groups, exploring their ideologies, ways of life, and overarching goals.
Chicago’s Gang Landscape: An In-depth Examination
In the series finale, Maddix turns his focus to Chicago, delving into the notorious gang landscape that has troubled the city for decades. With many gang leaders now incarcerated, traditional notions of loyalty and protection within these groups have deteriorated, leading to increased violence and higher incarceration rates.
Young gang members, some as young as 14, are often seen armed and on the streets, where they suggest that merely stepping outside presents a grave risk. One member describes their daily reality as chaotic, where common activities like visiting a restaurant or attending a funeral can be perilous.
These young individuals often adopt a militaristic approach to their movements around the city, prioritizing safety over the fear of imprisonment. “I’d rather be in a cell than dead,” one remarked, highlighting the stark choices they face.
Many of these youths, trapped in a cycle of violence, miss out on normal childhood experiences, such as completing their education.
Maddix also spoke with elder gang members who attempt to provide some form of guidance amidst this chaos. However, with the absence of established leaders, gang territories and interactions have become more unpredictable and dangerous.
One veteran member lamented the loss of unwritten rules that once offered some measure of protection, such as the avoidance of violence in the presence of family. “There used to be some lines we didn’t cross. Now, there’s no hesitation—they’ll take you and your kid out,” he explained.
Efforts to Curb Gang Violence
In response to these dire circumstances, local authorities have initiated a gang desistance program aimed at helping individuals break away from gang life. This initiative focuses on transforming self-defeating beliefs and providing support to reintegrate former gang members into society.
The final episode of Follow the Leader sheds light on this program and offers a poignant look at the complex web of violence that ensnares many of Chicago’s youth, providing a platform for their often unheard voices and stories.
The documentary series is exclusively available in the US, but viewers worldwide can access it on the VICE YouTube channel.
