$120 Stimulus Checks Coming This Summer: Find Out If You’re Eligible!

By Calvin Baxter

Stimulus checks are a key method by which state and federal governments deliver immediate financial aid to citizens during economic downturns. As we enter the summer vacation period, a time typically filled with family gatherings, many are facing severe financial pressures, especially with the absence of school-provided meals that many rely on during the school year.

How SNAP Aids Millions Across the Country

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), previously known as food stamps, plays a pivotal role in supporting over 40 million Americans by providing funds for food purchases. Recognized for significantly reducing child poverty and preventing many families from facing extreme financial distress, SNAP is an essential federal aid program.

Although SNAP is federally funded, it is administered on a state level where each state manages its own disbursement schedules and eligibility criteria. Generally, to be eligible for SNAP benefits, individuals must earn an income below a certain limit based on the poverty line and the number of people in their household. Those already receiving SNAP benefits may be eligible for additional support this summer to help cover the higher food costs when children are home from school.

Eligibility for a $120 ‘Sun Bucks’ Payment

This summer, a federal initiative called the Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer, known as the ‘Sun Bucks’ program, will provide $120 for each eligible child aged six to eighteen. This initiative aims to supplement family groceries budgets during the school break.

The USDA Food and Nutrition Service outlines eligibility for this payment as follows:

  • The child is part of a household that benefits from SNAP, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, or Medicaid (in certain states).
  • The child attends a school that participates in the National School Lunch Program or the School Breakfast Program and meets the income requirements.

Even if your child is not currently enrolled in these programs, you may still qualify for the Sun Bucks benefits by meeting specific income criteria.

The additional benefits can be used for purchasing:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Meat, poultry, and fish
  • Dairy products
  • Breads and cereals
  • Snack foods and non-alcoholic beverages

However, the Sun Bucks cannot be used for the following:

  • Prepared hot foods
  • Pet food
  • Cleaning or household supplies
  • Personal care items
  • Medications

Timing of Your Benefit Payments

If you are already a SNAP recipient, these additional funds will be directly loaded onto your Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. For those who automatically qualify but aren’t currently enrolled, an EBT card will be mailed for use at participating grocery stores. The exact timing of these payments may vary by state, with some states beginning as early as May.

Moreover, a recent legislative development, the ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’, has been enacted, which introduces significant changes to SNAP. This includes funding reductions that states will need to compensate for and new limitations on eligibility for future applicants. Currently, SNAP benefits will only be available to U.S. citizens, certain lawful permanent residents, Cuban and Haitian entrants, and citizens of the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and Palau under the Compact of Free Association.
