As summer approaches and schools wrap up for the break, a new financial aid in the form of cash payments is set to be distributed to families with children. The onset of summer often brings excitement for family bonding time, but for some, it also means an added financial burden worrying about feeding their children, who typically depend on school meals during the academic year. In response, the federal government is stepping in to provide financial assistance to eligible families.
SNAP Benefits: A Lifeline for Millions
Food insecurity is a critical issue that contributes directly to poverty and hardship in children’s lives. To address this, the federal government established the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which provides crucial food support to low-income families. Managed individually by each state, SNAP helps millions of Americans afford groceries each month. Eligibility for SNAP benefits is generally based on income, which must not exceed 200% of the federal poverty line, though specific criteria can vary between states.
Currently, over 40 million Americans depend on SNAP to help cover their food expenses. The amount of assistance received varies based on household size and income, among other factors.
New ‘Sun Bucks’ Program Offers $120 Per Child
To further support low-income families during the summer, the federal government has introduced a new initiative called the Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer program, known as ‘Sun Bucks.’ This program aims to provide additional financial resources for families to buy food during the school break. Each eligible child, aged six to 18, will receive $120 under this program. Eligibility includes children from households that benefit from SNAP, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, or Medicaid in certain states. Additionally, children attending schools that participate in the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs and meet certain income criteria are also eligible.
- Children within households receiving SNAP, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, or Medicaid (in participating states).
- Children attending schools that offer the National School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program and meet the income guidelines.
Timeline for Receiving Summer Benefits
Children who meet these criteria will be automatically enrolled in the program, and no further action is required from the parents. The additional funds will be loaded onto existing EBT cards, or a new one will be issued if necessary. States will begin rolling out these benefits at different times, with some families receiving them as early as May, while others will start this month.
While these payments will bring significant relief to many, the ongoing sustainability of SNAP is under threat due to proposed federal budget cuts by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which could potentially reduce funding and tighten eligibility criteria, making it harder for families to qualify.
