A fresh analysis from the University of Minnesota finds that obeying posted speed limits barely slows drivers but could yield meaningful savings in fuel, money and carbon—and cut traffic deaths. Published this month in Communications Sustainability, the study shows the average daily time penalty for driving at or below the limit is measured in seconds, while the societal costs of speeding are far larger.
The researchers examined more than 120 million vehicle trips across the United States to quantify what speeding actually costs: time, fuel, emissions and lives. Their results challenge the common assumption that going over the limit produces a meaningful time advantage for most drivers.
How much time do you really save?
On average, drivers who stayed within posted limits on highways and arterial roads added about 54 seconds to their daily travel time, based on a mean daily distance of 28.6 miles. That works out to just over six minutes over the course of a week—hardly a persuasive argument for risking higher speed.
Lead co-author William Northrop put the trade-off bluntly: “If your goal is to shave one minute off your time, then you’ve got to drive fast,” he said, adding that driving below the limit can improve safety and reduce fuel use.
National impacts: fuel, money and carbon
The study projects substantial aggregate benefits if drivers nationwide consistently obeyed speed limits. Conservatively, the authors estimate daily savings on the order of:
- More than 6 million gallons of fuel
- Approximately $18 million in fuel costs
- Roughly 50,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions
Annualized, those reductions are comparable to removing about 5.5 million conventional passenger vehicles from the road—an illustration of how small per-driver changes can scale into large national effects.
Who speeds, and by how much?
Speeding was widespread in the dataset: about 43% of trips included at least one speeding event. On trips where speeding occurred, drivers spent nearly 12% of their time above the posted limit, typically by around 11 mph.
There were sharp geographic differences. North Carolina had the highest share of trips involving speeding—about 62%—while Montana and South Dakota recorded under 27%. The researchers suggest those contrasts reflect differences in roadway design and enforcement as much as driver temperament.
Vehicle class mattered too. Two-seater passenger cars had the largest mean maximum speed excess—around 15 mph, with a substantial tail reaching as high as 27 mph for many drivers. The data also surfaced an unexpected pattern: drivers of hybrid vehicles and some remote workers tended to exceed limits more often than comparable in-office commuters in other studies, a nuance the team flagged for further research.
Lives lost, and what a small change could mean
Beyond fuel and emissions, the human cost is stark. Speeding was cited as a contributing factor in roughly 29% of U.S. traffic fatalities in 2024—about 11,288 lives lost, or more than 30 deaths per day. The authors note that even modest reductions in speeding prevalence could translate into meaningful declines in fatalities and serious injuries.

For policymakers, the argument is straightforward: modest behavioral changes—encouraged by improved road design, clearer limits and targeted enforcement—could deliver fuel, climate and safety benefits without changing vehicle fleets.
For drivers, the takeaway is equally practical. The time saved by exceeding limits is typically negligible, while the downsides—higher fuel use, greater emissions and increased crash risk—are concrete and measurable.
Northrop summarized the study’s practical message: slowing down is a low-tech, high-impact intervention that can achieve sizable savings and reduce harm without replacing vehicles. In short, trading a minute a day for safer roads and lower emissions may be a rational choice for both individuals and communities.
